Frequently Asked Questions

Questions you may have or what others have wondered about the therapy process:

  • We will spend our first session getting to know one another and discussing what’s led you to seek help, and for me to develop an understanding of what brought you to therapy. This will also give you a chance to get a feel for how I work and to ask any questions you have about our work. From there we will begin to develop goals and a plan for how we want our sessions to go.

  • Clients have described our sessions as supportive, collaborative, and client centered. In our sessions, you get to decide what you would like to work on and the pace you would like to work. I believe it is important to establish a collaborative and safe working relationship so we can begin helping you to identify and reduce areas of anxiety, understand patterns of protective reactions with yourself and others, and to experience and work through any cut-off emotions and past painful events.

  • I am an out-of-network provider, meaning I am not paneled with any insurance companies, and I accept the full fee upfront. At the end of each month I provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company to seek reimbursement for your session costs. The amount you will receive from you insurance company will depend on the type of plan you have. It is important to check with your company and find out about out-of-network benefits. Please note that not all insurance companies will reimburse for therapy services.

  • The length of time really depends on the person, their history, and the complexity of their problems. I typically meet with my clients weekly for 50-minute sessions. Some clients do well with a shorter course of therapy, and other need more long term treatment. Either way, the length is up to you and what we determine to be the best length and frequency needed to meet you therapy goals. My goal is to help you get relief in the most time efficient way we can.

  • $200 for standard 50-minute session (video or in-office).

    $300 for 90-minute session (video or in-office).

$200 for 55-minute supervision or consultation (video)

    * Sliding scale available under certain circumstances.

  • For most clients, a 50-minute session once a week is the preferred frequency. In some cases, I see clients every other week, usually due to scheduling issues or other factors. For some clients seeking more intensive work, meeting for longer sessions (90-minutes) or more often (2x a week) is usually what we agree to do.

  • Missed appointments and appointments cancelled with less than 24-hour notice will be charged the full session fee, unless we can reschedule within 6 days of the cancellation or missed appointment. If you need to cancel or reschedule a session, it is fine to either text or email me ahead of time.

  • Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy is an empirically validated approach based on the findings of neuroscience, attachment studies, and psychodynamic theory.

According to this model, many of our psychological issues are based on the emotional effects (i.e., anger, rage, guilt, grief, etc.) of unresolved painful, shaming, or other traumatic experiences with your caregivers or important persons in your life. These emotional injuries can create a cascade of painful feelings and anxiety which results in various symptoms.

The ISTDP therapist is an active advocate of change rather than a neutral observer. The attitude of the ISTDP therapist is that the patient's time is irreplaceable and comprehensive change is possible in a reasonable, cost-effective time frame.

In ISTDP, the experience of core emotion from the past is seen as the transformative vehicle and the therapist will provide encouragement to feel; challenge to take responsibility to change; and confrontation of and working through barriers to change.
